Dan still rides his 2008 model. Covering over 13,000 kilometers this bike has been subjected to huge hills, rain, headwinds, gravel roads both in Australia and overseas. During this time, nothing has broken or worn out.
But Dan is also on a mission to challenge stereotypes. He feels that Highwheel bicycles are often seen as a bicycle ridden slowly by an old man with a top hat. For Dan this is not the case at all "the original invention came about from a desire to go ridiculously fast and cover long distances” . In part, this mission has lead to the collaboration with Revolve24 and the inaugural SA Penny Farthing Championship that will take place on Saturday the 13th of January, 2018. The race will be just one part of Revolve24’s festival of cycling taking place that weekend.
The Penny Farthing race will happen at the brand-new, world class track at The Bend Motorsport Park, with up to twenty of these spectacular machines competing in a 30 minute sprint race, reaching speeds of up to 45-50km/hr. As this will be the first, timed race to grace this new bitumen then a Penny Farthing will capture the lap record.
The main Revolve24 challenge event, the 24hr cycling endurance challenge will kick off in the afternoon after the Penny Farthing Championship. The team endurance challenge is suited to riders of any skill level. Riders can choose between 24 hour, 12 hour and 6 hour challenges and enter as a soloist or a team of 2, 4, 6 or 8.
